SolarCity is expanding its Massachusetts operations with a new 10,000 square foot North Shore Operations Center in Wilmington. The new operations center— SolarCity's third in Massachusetts—brings new jobs to the area and allows the company to keep pace with growing solar demand in the northeastern part of the state.
SolarCity makes it possible for many Massachusetts homeowners to install solar panels for free and pay less for solar electricity than they pay for electricity from the local utility. SolarCity can install solar for local residents for no money out of pocket and show immediate savings. This includes design, installation, monitoring, insurance, and a performance guarantee.
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and the state legislature have championed the growth of the solar industry in Massachusetts. The passing of the Green Communities Act, the Global Warming Solutions Act and the Green Jobs Act in 2008 set the framework for Massachusetts energy policies that have helped to spur the rapid growth in the Massachusetts solar marketplace.
The expansion means a significant number of new jobs for the area. SolarCity currently has more than 50 open positions for the new facility and 100 open positions across the state. Open positions include installers, sales, electricians and engineers. This is the company’s second expansion in the state over the last six months.
Secretary Maeve Vallely Bartlett at Energy and Environmental Affairs said: “The Massachusetts solar industry is growing by leaps and bounds, and this facility is yet another brick and mortar example. The continued growth of solar here in the Commonwealth shows that our investments in clean energy provide are not just environmental benefits, but economic ones, as well.”
Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s (MassCEC) CEO Alicia Barton also commented: “With more than 8,400 workers, the solar industry is truly booming in Massachusetts.”
