The Thai Ministry of Energy has recently announced an enormous boost to the ASEAN solar industry.

600MW of new private sector solar PPAs, 800MW of government or agricultural co-op solar and a 70MW window opening for a residential FiT will be added before December 2015.

Just some of other current opportunities for solar deployment in the ASEAN region include:

  • Indonesia: Utility companies are giving priority to rural electrification, intending to complete 90% of electrification by 2025
  • Malaysia: 1.3GW target with current budget allocated to Ministry of Rural and Regional Development of around RM100 million to RM200 million for off-grid renewable energy projects
  • Vietnam: trial project for local energy planning conducted by the Hanoi-based NGO Green Innovation and Development Center (GreenID) and the Energy Alliance
